As time progresses, Science and Technology are also moved forward and resulted many changes that influence human civilization. One of the major changes is the Internet. It was in 1960s when Internet is founded. Since then, Internet has played an important role in human activities in many aspects, especially in education. Many college students use the Internet to aid them to do their assignments and communicate with their friends and teachers. The presence of the Internet has been giving abundant of advantages for college students. But, some people think that the access to the Internet must be limited for college students because it will bring harm than good. However, limiting the Internet access to college students is not a wise decision for several reasons.
First of all, the Internet will not always bring harms to college students. People might argue that when there is no limitation for college students to access the Internet, they will have opportunities to access unnecessary contents on the Internet through browsing activity. Further they claim, by giving no limitation to access the Internet, students will be less social. On the other hand, when there is a limitation giving to college students to access the Internet, they will be better persons. But, all of the claims are not true when we observe the Internet carefully. Despite its bad impacts, the Internet also has advantages on college students.
However, according to Pew Internet & American Life Project, college students are the most users of the Internet. They are also the first Internet users since WWII. Internet use is a staple of college students’ educational experience. This means the Internet has been the part of the students’ life since the time. They use the Internet to communicate with professors and classmates, to do research, and to access library materials. For most college students the Internet is a functional tool, one that has greatly changed the way they interact with others and with information as they go about their studies. The college experience is not only about learning in the classroom, it is also about encountering new social situations and gaining new social skills. College students use the Internet nearly as much for social communication as they do for their education. For example, they need Internet to access virtual classroom. Nowadays, many companies are doing transformation in education, especially in teaching and learning system. Google Classroom is one of the well-known apps used for virtual class. In addition, just as they use the Internet to supplement the formal parts of their education, they go online to enhance their social lives.
Another reason why the Internet access must not be limited is the limitation of accessing the Internet against Human Rights. Based on the survey conducted by GlobeScan that involved 27 thousand respondents from 26 different countries revealed that majority of people agree that Internet access is Human Rights and therefore must not be limited. Among them, 78% of the respondents believed that the Internet gives them freedom such as freedom of expressing thoughts, 10 % of the respondents believed that the Internet is a tool for helping students in learning. In addition, almost fifty percent of the respondents agree that Internet should not be intervened by the government. Furthermore, according to BBC World Service Opinion Poll more than 27.000 adults in 26 countries think that Internet must be seen as basic needs just like food and water. Countries like Finland and Estonia had been decided that the Internet access is Human Rights and United Nations has also urged the universal networking access. Moreover, Dr Hamadoun Toure, the general secretary of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), stated to BBC News that the rights for communicating cannot be neglected because it is the strongest potential source that ever been made.
All in all, there is not right when giving the limitation of accessing the Internet then students will be better persons. There are several reasons why the Internet access must not be limited to students. Giving limitation of the Internet means giving a wall to the students to help them to do their college activities. Furthermore, it may also against students Human Rights. By limiting them to access the Internet, they have a lot of things forbidden, which may be considered as privacy that cannot be intervene by anybody else.
