Soon the final year students of Senior High schools will
take the National Examination. Talking about the National Examination, it is still
a hot talks among Indonesian, either students or teachers, since the Minister of
Education and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, planned to negate the National
Examination temporarily. Hearing this, I believe, many students will be very
happy since the National Examination has been the nightmare for quite a long
time for them.
But, for sure, my reason writing this article is not to talk
about the National Examination or what students will do to deal with it. But,
for sure, what students will do after the National Examination. Continuing their study to the higher education level, that is university. Although not less of
them will stop continuing their study to the higher education level due to certain
circumstances most of them will keep on track to get straight to the next
level of education.
It is commonly happening among students at the edge of their
time at High Schools. For those who want to continue their study, they will
confuse of deciding the university they would enter. Would it be Public
University or Private University?
In the following I’ll be talking about some similarities and
differences between the two kinds of universities.
Both Public Universities and Private Universities have the
same aim, that is giving education. However, not only they have some similarities
but also some differences in particular ways. Public Universities are universities
that is managed by the governments either under the Ministry of Education or
under government-owned departments. On the other hand, Private Universities are
universities that are managed by individuals or groups. Generally, Public
Universities get subsidies from the governments both in the management and
implementation of education. In contrast, Private Universities management and
implementation of education becomes the responsibility of the college concerned
completely. The tuition fee in Public Universities is not that expensive.
Different from State Universities, it is more expensive in Private
Universities. The numbers of students in Public Universities are usually massive,
while it is fewer in Private Universities. That is why , in State Universities,
students are not so concerned by lectures because of the large number of the
students. Not the same as Public Universities, students in Private Universities
are likely concerned by lectures. It is due to the smaller number they have than Public Universities have. For students who desire scholarships, it will
be easy to reach them out in Public Universities, but in Private Universities it
will be hard to do that. In Public Universities, the university entrance is not that easy.
Students have to take several entrance tests to get into the university. But,
in Private University it is quite easy. No entrance tests are required. Although, each university has advantages and disadvantages to determine which one
is the best, absolutely, depends on every individual.
